Linked Tables – Connect SQL Server and Refresh on a Schedule

Linked Tables: Connect SQL Server & Refresh on a Schedule

Connect external databases, import tables, and keep data fresh with manual or scheduled refreshes.

9-minute read

With Linked Tables, Taptic Data lets you connect directly to external data sources like Microsoft SQL Server, import selected tables or views, and refresh them on a set schedule — all without leaving your workspace.

What Are Linked Tables?

Linked Tables bridge your live databases with the Taptic Data platform. They’re imported once, stored securely in your company schema, and refreshed automatically to stay current.

Connect to SQL Server in Taptic Data

Connect your SQL Server database directly from the Linked Tables interface.

Connecting to SQL Server

You can add a connection by providing your database credentials — including hostname, database name, username, and password. Once connected, Taptic Data automatically lists available tables and views for easy selection.

🔒 Connection credentials are encrypted and stored securely — only authorized users can manage connections or trigger refreshes.

Importing Tables or Views

Select one or more objects from your database to import. Each becomes a linked table in your company’s schema, preserving data types, column names, and primary keys. During import, Taptic Data automatically normalizes field names and handles unsupported data types.

Refreshing Data

You can refresh your linked tables manually at any time, or schedule automated refreshes. Scheduled refreshes keep your data up to date without manual intervention — perfect for dashboards that need current information each morning.

Linked Tables Refresh Schedules in Taptic Data

Set daily, weekly, or monthly refresh schedules directly from your Linked Tables panel.

Scheduling Options

Each linked table can have its own refresh frequency — daily, weekly, monthly, or quarterly. You can view and modify schedules anytime, and each refresh run is logged with a timestamp and status message for transparency.

View Refresh Logs

The Linked Tables page displays your last refresh time and the next scheduled run. If a refresh fails, you’ll see detailed log entries including the affected table, timestamp, and any error message, so you can quickly diagnose and retry.

Manual Refresh

Need to update a table on demand? Click the Refresh Now button beside any table to trigger an immediate refresh. The process uses the same import logic as scheduled runs — it checks for new records, updates changes, and preserves existing schema definitions.

Behind the Scenes

Each refresh uses Taptic Data’s UPSERT mechanism — updating rows when a match is found and inserting new ones otherwise. This ensures efficient, incremental updates without full reimports.

Current Support

At this time, Taptic Data supports direct connections to Microsoft SQL Server as the first available connector. Snowflake and Oracle integrations are coming soon, expanding how teams unify cloud and on-prem data.

Linked Tables make it simple to bring live external data into your Taptic Data dashboards. Connect your SQL Server, choose your refresh schedule, and let your insights stay automatically up to date.
